“Người trung gian” là ai?
Là người nhận Lời từ YHWH và truyền Lời cho cộng đồng/cá nhân. Họ:
- đứng giữa YHWH và người nghe;
- kêu gọi vâng phục một hành động cụ thể;
2) Môi-se
Trung gian: Môi-se (nhận Lời, giơ gậy, rẽ biển).
Người nghe: Dân Israel (đi theo).
Hành động: Đi qua Biển Đỏ.
Kết cục: Sống (địch quân chìm).
3) Ê-li-sa & Na-a-man

Trung gian cấp 2: Người tớ của Na-a-man (chuyển lời, khuyên vâng).
Người nghe: Na-a-man.

Who is “the Mediator”?
A “mediator” is the one who receives the Word from YHWH and delivers the Word to a community or an individual. Such a person:
- stands between YHWH and the hearers;
- calls for obedience to a specific action;
- through that obedience opens the way to life (cleanness, salvation) — while refusal leads to death.
1) Noah
Mediator: Noah (hears the Word, builds the ark, calls others).
Hearers: Noah’s family (they obey and enter the ark).
Action: Passing through judgment by water.
Outcome: Life.
Those who pass through the water together:
- those who hear the word of the mediator are saved,
- those who do not hear, die.
2) Moses
Mediator: Moses (receives the Word, raises the staff, the sea is split).
Hearers: The people of Israel (they follow).
Action: Passing through the Red Sea.
Outcome: Life (the enemy is drowned).
3) Elisha & Naaman
First-level mediator: Elisha (the Word comes through the prophet).
Second-level mediator: Naaman’s servant (relays the word, urges obedience).
Hearer: Naaman.
Action: Go down into the Jordan River (7 times).
Outcome: Clean.
4) John the Baptist
Mediator: John.
Hearers: The people (who come confessing).
Action: Being immersed in water for repentance.
Outcome: Clean (preparing their hearts for the One who will baptize in the Spirit).
5) Jonah — changed through the sea and lives
Hearer: Jonah (he hears the Word but does not obey).
Action: Thrown into the sea → cries out to YHWH.
Outcome: Lives → his heart is changed to continue the mission.
6) When there is no Word / when the Word is not received — going into the water and dying
Mediators: Noah, Moses.
Hearers: The people of Noah’s time, the Egyptians (who do not listen).
Action: Being submerged / drowned.
Outcome: Death.
Summary of the “Mediator” Pattern
- Word → Noah → family → through water → life
- Word → Moses → people → through water → life
- Elisha (→ servant) → Naaman → immersed in water → clean
- Word → John → people → immersed in water → clean
- Word → Jonah (disobeys) → immersed in water → changed → life
- No Word / rejection of the Word → immersed in water → death
Core Message
The Word always comes through a mediator.
Whoever obeys the Word through the mediator and goes down into the water will live / be cleansed; whoever refuses and goes down into the water will die.
“Lord kills and makes alive;
He brings down to Sheol and brings up.” (1 Samuel 2:6)
7) Jesus
John 9:7
“Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”).
So he went and washed and came back seeing.
Jesus = the One who is sent (the mediator) → the blind man obeys → washes his eyes → sees.
Come and be ‘immersed’ into the ‘One who is sent’ (Jesus) in order to be cleansed and to see.
John 13:10
Jesus said to him:
“He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean.”
“Has bathed” is in the passive voice → it implies that the person has already been washed by an external agent (possibly grace, the Word, or some divine action).
This is different from washing the feet — which is an active action, repeated daily.
So this saying has a symbolic meaning:
- Whoever has been washed entirely (i.e., cleansed in their being) does not need to be bathed again,
- but only needs to keep their feet clean — that is, to live a daily life of obedience.
But if one does not keep oneself clean and becomes defiled according to the Law, then according to the Law one must wash again.
John 15:3
“You are already clean because of the Word which I have spoken to you.”
Cleansed by the Word.
