• Do Thái giáo

III.

    • vừa Do Thái (Khí Khôn Ngoan ở cùng YHWH từ ban đầu – Châm ngôn 8 )

Heraclitus & Stoics: Logos = nguyên lý triết học, không liên quan Do Thái hay Jesus.
Philo: Logos = công cụ Đức Chúa Trời sáng tạo, cầu nối Do Thái – Hy Lạp.
John: Logos = Khí khôn ngoan / nguyên lý sáng tạo, được ban trọn vẹn cho Jesus.

📌 Chú thích:

λόγος (logos) = lời, lý lẽ, nguyên lý.
Hokmah / Sophia = Khí Khôn Ngoan trong Do Thái giáo, hiện diện cùng YHWH khi sáng thế.
John 1:1–18 = phần mở đầu thi ca, không phải văn xuôi kể chuyện đơn giản.

ENGLISH

When reading John 1:1 — “In the beginning was the Logos…” — many people immediately think of Jesus. But to understand it correctly, we need to view Logos (a Greek term) in a wider context:

  • Greek philosophy,
  • Judaism,
  • and John’s own usage.

1. Logos — the basic meaning in Greek

The word λόγος (logos) has a very broad range of meanings:

  • Speech, statement, discourse (speech, discourse)
  • Reason, argument, calculation (reason, account)
  • Principle, rational order that governs the universe (principle, rational order)

So logos is not merely “word” in the sense of written text. It can also refer to power, rationality, and a living principle.

2. Heraclitus (around 500 BC)

A Greek philosopher who lived about five centuries before Jesus.

He did not follow Judaism and had no knowledge of Jesus.

He used Logos to refer to a universal principle—the common order that governs change (similar to a “law of nature”).

For him, Logos belongs to Greek philosophy, not to the Bible.

3. The Stoics (300 BC – AD 200)

Greek–Roman philosophers (Zeno, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, etc.).

They did not follow Judaism or Jesus.

For them, Logos is a divine fire, a rational principle permeating the whole universe. Whoever lives according to Logos lives “in harmony with nature” → happiness.

Thus Logos becomes a universal law for the cosmos and for ethics.

4. Philo of Alexandria (20 BC – AD 50)

A Jew, living around the time of Jesus, not long before John.

He wanted to combine the Hebrew Scriptures with Greek philosophy.

He called Logos a mediator between God and the world, the instrument God uses to create.

This is a direct bridge for Jewish–Greek readers to understand Logos in John.

5. The Old Testament

In the Old Testament, “the Word of YHWH” is not merely sound; it is living creative power (Genesis 1:3: “God said… and it came to be…”).

A Jewish reader hearing “In the beginning was the Logos” would immediately think of Wisdom (Hokmah / Sophia) in the Old Testament:

“YHWH possessed Wisdom at the beginning of His way, before His works of old.” (Proverbs 8:22)

That Spirit of Wisdom is “with God from the beginning.”

Wisdom is also one of the spirits God gives to chosen people to carry out the work He assigns.

1) The Spirit of Wisdom given to craftsmen and leaders

  • Exodus 31:3 — about Bezalel:
“I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all skill.”
→ Wisdom-Spirit is given for craftsmanship, for building the tabernacle.
  • Deuteronomy 34:9 — about Joshua:
“Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him.”
→ Wisdom-Spirit is given to Joshua to lead the people.

2) The Spirit of Wisdom as a divine gift

  • Isaiah 11:2 — prophecy about “the Shoot from the stump of Jesse”:
“The Spirit of YHWH shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of YHWH.”
→ The Spirit of Wisdom is a key aspect of the Spirit of YHWH.

3) God gives Wisdom

  • Isaiah 28:26 — about the farmer’s skill:
“For his God instructs him and teaches him the right way.”
  • Proverbs 2:6
“For YHWH gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
  • Daniel 1:17 — about four young men (Daniel and his friends):
“God gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom.”
  • 1 Kings 3 — Solomon asks for wisdom to judge the people and discern good and evil.

4) Passages emphasizing understanding comes from God

  • Job 32:8
“But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.”
  • John 14:26 — Jesus promises the Holy Spirit:
“The Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things.”
→ This continues the pattern: God gives Spirit to teach, including the Spirit of Wisdom.

The Old Testament repeatedly emphasizes: wisdom is not something humans naturally possess; God grants it by His Spirit—whether to craftsmen, leaders, prophets, or ordinary people.

In John, the Spirit is promised to continue teaching—showing a link between the “Spirit of Wisdom” in the Old Testament and the “Holy Spirit” in the New Testament.

Therefore, Logos does not have to be identical with a historical person (Jesus). First, it is an attribute, a Spirit of YHWH from the beginning, through which all things were made.

6. John 1 and Logos

John 1:1–5 (a literal rendering, preserving original word order, without inserting punctuation)

(1) in beginning was Logos and Logos that toward God and God was Logos
(2) this in beginning toward God
(3) all things through this came to be and apart from this not one thing came to be
that which came to be (4) in this was life and the life that was the light of the people
(5) and the light in the darkness shines and the darkness did not grasp it

When John writes “in the beginning was Logos,” a Jewish reader would immediately connect it to the Spirit of Wisdom by which YHWH creates.

This language is both:

  • Jewish (Wisdom/Spirit of Wisdom with YHWH from the beginning — Proverbs 8),
  • and Greek (Logos as a creative principle).

John did not “invent Logos.” He placed it within the religious–philosophical context of his time.

7. Jesus is given Spirit — Word — Wisdom

1) Jesus is given Spirit / Word from God

  • John 1:32–33
John testified: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove and remain on him… the one on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain—this is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.”
→ Jesus receives the Holy Spirit after baptism.
  • John 3:34–35
“He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for He gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.”
→ Jesus is given the Spirit / all things fully, without limitation, in order to speak God’s word.
  • John 7:16
“My teaching is not mine, but His who sent me.”
→ Jesus receives the Word directly from God.
  • John 8:28
“I do nothing of myself; but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.”
→ Again confirming Jesus receives instruction from God.

2) Jesus is given wisdom

  • John 7:15–16
The Jews were astonished: “How does this man know letters, having never studied?” Jesus answered: “My teaching is not mine, but His who sent me.”
→ Jesus’ wisdom and understanding come from God, not human schooling.
  • John 12:49–50
“I have not spoken on my own authority; but the Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to say it… and I know that His command is eternal life.”
→ The wisdom in Jesus’ speech is given by God.

3) The Lamb receives the seven Spirits

  • Revelation 5:6
“I saw in the midst of the throne… a Lamb as though slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.”
→ The Lamb (Jesus) bears the seven Spirits, symbolizing fullness of power and wisdom from God.

4) The shoot from Jesse receives the Spirit of Wisdom and other Spirits

  • Isaiah 11:1–2
“From the stump of Jesse a shoot will come…
the Spirit of YHWH will rest upon him:
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of YHWH.”

→ This is a prophecy about the Anointed One, describing the Spirits granted to that Shoot.

Conclusion

  • Heraclitus & the Stoics: Logos = philosophical principle, not related to Judaism or Jesus.
  • Philo: Logos = God’s instrument of creation, a Jewish–Greek bridge.
  • John: Logos = Spirit of Wisdom / creative principle, given fully to Jesus.

Notes

  • λόγος (logos) = word, reason, principle
  • Hokmah / Sophia = Spirit of Wisdom in Judaism, present with YHWH at creation
  • John 1:1–18 = a poetic prologue, not simple narrative prose
