ENGLISH
ἄγγελος (Angelos): messenger
https://biblehub.com/greek/32.htm
Used with the following meanings and translated as:
-
- Spirit messenger for YHWH: angel (many occurrences, not all can be cited)
- Human messenger for YHWH: messenger (Mt 11:10)
- Spirit belonging to Satan’s side: messenger (Rev 12:9) (Mt 25:41)
- Human messenger to other humans: messenger (Lk 7:24) (Lk 9:52) (Mar 1:2) (James 2:25)
A fair translation of this word must be messenger / envoy (which can be Spirit or Human).
(compared with Psalm 45:7–8)
5 For to which of the messengers did God ever say:
“You are My Son; today I have begotten You”?
And again:
“I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son”?
6 And again, when He brings the Firstborn into the world, He says:
“Let all the messengers of God worship Him.”
7 And concerning the messengers He says:
“God makes His messengers winds,
and His servants flames of fire.”
8 But concerning the Son He says:
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
the scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of righteousness.
9 You loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness
above Your companions.”
.
Hebrews 1 compares Jesus with the messengers.
And Hebrews 3 compares Jesus with Moses.
So in Hebrews 1, do the messengers refer to humans or spirits?
THE SONS OF GOD
Spirits / angels:
-
- Rejoiced at the creation of Father YHWH (Job 38:7)
- Came to present themselves before YHWH, including Satan (Job 1:6; 2:1)
- The sons of God “married” the daughters of men (Gen 6:2)
Humans:
-
- Through faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:26–27)
- Receive the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father” (Rom 8:15)
- Led by the Holy Spirit are sons of God (Rom 8:14; 8:16)
- Will not die anymore, being sons of the resurrection (Luke 20:36)
- Heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ (Rom 8:17)
- Makers of peace (Mt 5:9)
- He who overcomes will inherit these things (Rev 21:7)
ONLY SON – monogenes
Abraham
Ishmael was the firstborn son of Abraham.
Ishmael was driven out of his father’s house (Gen 21:14).
→ Isaac, the younger son, became the Only Son of Abraham (Gen 22:2).
Ishmael was still promised a lineage (Gen 16:10–11; 17:20).
Isaac was the one with whom YHWH established the covenant (Gen 17:21).
God
Adam was the first human created by God.
(Luke 3:38) Adam — son of God.
Adam was driven out of the Garden of Eden (Gen 3:24).
→ Jesus is the monogenes of God.
Adam has a lineage.
Jesus is the one with whom the covenant is established.
Personal viewpoint:
- Jesus is the Only Son of God while on this earth. He is the Only Son because the first son, Adam, lost his status as son. But when He rose and used His blood to redeem humankind, then other humans also became sons of God.
- In heaven, YHWH God already had many sons (the book of Job).
